About the Journal

The Brazilian Journal of Physical Therapy (BJPT) has been under the charge of the Physical Therapy Department of Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) since 1996 by written agreement with the Brazilian Society of Physical Therapy Research and Graduate Studies (ABRAPG-Ft), an organization that brings together academic staff from universities around the country who are involved in research and graduate programs in the area of physical therapy and rehabilitation sciences.

Historically, under the editorship of several academics of the Physical Therapy Program of Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), the BJPT came to fill the gap of national scientific journals in the area of physical therapy that existed in the 1990s. Later, in the 2000s, they joined forces with academics from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and, from 2010, academics of other universities also began to contribute as editors. The guidelines set by the Journal for the publication of scientific articles since the first edition have earned it national recognition by the scientific community. With the expansion of graduate studies in the area of physical therapy and with the support of various educational institutions in Brazil, there was a significant increase in the quality of the Journal and its articles. This process led to the approval of the BJPT for indexing in the database SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library OnLine) in 2006, considered one of the most important milestones in the Journal’s history.

With its indexing in SciELO, the BJPT launched its full electronic version on the website http://www.scielo.br/rbfis and in 2007, as part of its strategy for internationalization, it also launched a full online version in English through that database. Also in 2007, the BJPT was included in the databases CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature) and Periódica; in 2008, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and JCR (Journal Citation Reports of Thomson Reuters/ISI Web of Knowledge); in 2010, MEDLINE/PUBMED (National Library of Medicine); in 2011, Redalyc; and in 2012, EMBASE.

The BJPT has undergone several changes as part of its actions and strategies for internationalization and greater visibility. The improvements in its graphic design, content, and editorial and review boards are historical milestones in the Journal’s evolution. To continue this process, starting in 2013, the Journal officially adopted the title Brazilian Journal of Physical Therapy (BJPT) as its main title with the intent of intensifying the internationalization process as well as maintaining its Brazilian identity. In this same year, starting with volume 17.1, the BJPT underwent changes in its format – cover, font and layout – and visual identity. These modifications aim to maintain the high quality of this scientific journal, which is currently an important means of reporting the results of scientific research to guide and strengthen the work of physical therapists.

This growth was made possible by the joint effort of all participating authors, reviewers and editors who have been dedicated to the quality of the BJPT and to the entire scientific and clinical community in the area.
